"It's Written in the Stars"

The Phillies' Stars are on the rise this season, fueled by the galvanizing free agent signings of industrious Virgos Jim Thome and David Bell, and disciplined Capricorn Kevin Millwood's thrilling no-hitter. A new stadium on the horizon makes the future look even more illustrious. As a Sports Astrologer and baseball fan, it's my pleasure to take a celestial glance at what's in the stars for the Phillies' star players. It looks like an exhilarating season ahead!
Bobby Abreu (3/11/74) - Aragua, Venezuela
A compassionate Pisces with a prevailing sense of mission, Bobby's batted .312, while averaging more than 22 HRs and 88 RBIs in five seasons with the Phillies. With Mars (planet of energy) in busy bee Gemini, he's restless and perpetually on the go. Thriving on nervous energy, he led the league in doubles last year, and is the first 30 HR/30 SB player in franchise history. He also drew more than 100 walks for the 4th straight year, seeing a league high of 2,923 pitches! This season marks Bobby's Saturn Return, an auspicious rite of passage occurring at age 29, characterized by increased ambition. His zeal is contagious. Consumed with attaining goals, he's a force to be reckoned with.
David Bell (9/14/72) - Cincinnati, OH
A modest Virgo who rarely seeks the limelight, David Bell led his team last year with 154 games. David strives for accuracy by combining a cautious approach with superior performance standards. He finished 3rd in the NL with a .973 fielding percentage. Blessed with skilled hands, quick reactions, and a penchant for perfection, David committed just 12 errors with San Francisco last season. Hitting .317 with runners in scoring position in '02, he's the perfect situational hitter. Obsessed with winning, this post-season good luck charm works exceedingly hard, and for long hours. Still he mustn't overdo-Virgos can be workaholics.
Pat Burrell (10/10/1976) - Eureka Springs, AK
While harmony and balance are Libra keynotes, Pat's equally driven by a sense of destiny, and an almost compulsive desire for recognition. Going to extremes, he's remarkably willful and fixated in achieving greatness. With as much raw power as Mark McGwire, he set career highs in every offensive category except SB. His whopping 116 RBIs were the 3rd best in the NL last season, and his 37 HRs are the most since Mike Schmidt in 1985. He led all NL left fielders in doubles and RBIs. With Mars (energy) in relentless Scorpio, his extraordinary drive is palpable. Daring, impulsive, and rebellious, this season Pat embraces responsibility, bringing heightened concentration to the plate. His reputation can only rise!
Marlon Bryd (8/30/77) - Boynton Beach, FL
Another methodical Virgo, Marlon's realistic and practical. With Mars (energy) next to Jupiter (expansion) Marlon has a positive, "can-do" attitude, tackling challenge with relish. After proving himself in AAA Scranton last year, he's refined the requisite tools-power to all fields, excellent bat speed, and a good arm. Inspiring others with joie de vivre, this promising center field newcomer is a solid defensive player with surprising brawn for his size-he can bench press 430 pounds! With a bewitching blend of speed and power, he led the International League in runs and extra base hits. After a stint on the DL in April, he needs to be conscious of skeletal susceptibility. However, Marlon's eager to make up for lost time. Delay doesn't mean denial to this potential Rookie of the Year.
Mike Lieberthal (1/18/72) - Glendale, CA
Driven to prove himself, Mike's a disciplined Capricorn with a deep belief in his ability to emerge victoriously from challenge. The Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year, Mike rebounded from knee surgery and started 126 games. The hardy Capricorn work ethic pervades, as Mike accomplished 476 at bats. As Capricorn rules the skeletal structure (bones, knees, joints), it's prudent for Mike to be cautious. This two-time All-Star pursues goals with utter seriousness. Second among NL catchers in doubles, HRs, and RBIs, tenacious Mike's been opening day catcher for six straight seasons. With Mars in Aries, he embodies the courageous warrior's attitude-spirited, highly effective, and eager to achieve.
José Mesa (5/22/66) - Azua, Dominican Republic
Eternally youthful Gemini José Mesa is fearless-a vital trait for a closer. Approaching challenge head-on, he's bestowed with strong physical drive, a victorious spirit, and the will to win. José converted 87 out of 100 saves in two years with Philly, and is the first Phillies' reliever to record two 40+ save seasons. He also led all Phillies' relievers in strikeouts and appearances. With Mars in determined Taurus, he labors unwaveringly. Nitty-gritty work often falls to José. With stamina as his greatest strength, this workhorse set a club record with 45 saves last season. This year the universe throws José a curve ball, as sudden events test his ability to stay on the chosen path. More restless and easily excitable, expect the unexpected.
Kevin Millwood (12/24/74) - Gastonia, NC
Quiet, concentrated Capricorn Kevin can be overly self-critical. An old soul, somewhat difficult to know, Kevin focuses wholly on strategizing goals. With Mars in enterprising Sagittarius, he's ambitious, with a strong need to see his plans to completion. Ever on the look out for new opportunities, he's seldom satisfied with past accomplishments. Kevin went 16-3 with a 2.65 ERA in his last twenty-five starts. His great arm strength makes this "innings' eater" invaluable. Kevin pitched a dazzling no-hitter on April 27, 2003, the ninth no-hitter in Phillies history, the sixth on that auspicious date, and a memorable birthday for the Phillies Phanatic! This June, Saturn (planet of limitation) may lessen vitality. By conserving his energy, Kevin'll have plenty stashed away to bring into play.
Vicente Padilla (9/27/77) - Chinandega, Nicaragua
Libra Vicente Padilla has a buoyant, cheerful disposition and powerful will. He can be so driven he sometimes loses objectivity. This hard-throwing right-hander has enormous reserves, and is capable of astounding effort and achievement. An All-Star last season, his "electric stuff" produced ten first half wins. Strong and durable Vicente pitched at least six innings in 26 of 32 starts, and his walk ratio was 8th best in the NL. He led the Phillies' staff in wins (14) and starts (32), throwing all four pitches for strikes. During this season, sociable Vincente will be withdrawing more in order to perform. Earnest, with a strong sense of purpose, the "Padilla Flotilla" should be sailing on smooth seas.
Placido Polanco (10/10/75) - Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
A versatile Libra, Placido excels at vigorous physical activities that require fast reflexes and a good sense of timing. He has an abundance of energy and vitality, and believes strongly in the power of "positivity"-that through initiative, each individual possesses the ability to make life all that one desires. A potent career contact hitter (.296) that rarely makes mistakes at the plate or on the field (.978 fielding percentage), this talented second baseman blends well with Rollins in a double play tandem. Paying more attention to health (esp. bones) will keep him in balance. Increasingly vigorous and energetic, this summer ushers in a period of growth and acceleration.
Jimmy Rollins (11/27/78) - Oakland, CA
An adventurer at heart, fire sign Sagittarius Jimmy Rollins is an incurable optimist, destined for greatness. With Mars in Libra, he's the consummate team player, making claims through collaboration. That bodes well for spine-tingling double plays with Polanco! Naturally athletic, he was the only National Leaguer with double digits in 2B, 3B, HR, and stolen bases in '02. He's fast too-leading NL shortstops in triples and stolen bases. Blending Gold Glove caliber defense with a gun for an arm, he was named Best Defensive Shortstop by Baseball America. He's the first Phillie to make the All-Star team in his first two Major League seasons. 2003 is another high-energy cycle, heralding enhanced self-confidence, physical health, and well-deserved success.
Jim Thome (8/27/70) - Peoria, IL
A hard-working Virgo with huge aspirations, Jim's an exacting perfectionist. Well-grounded and pragmatic, Virgos develop specialized skills, expertise, and mastery. This slugger is no exception-Thome's posted over 30 HRs, 100 RBIs, 100 walks, and 100 runs in six of his last seven seasons. With Jim's Mars (planet of energy) in forceful Leo, he's highly competitive. This summer should be particularly fortuitous, as Jupiter, planet of good fortune, increases vitality and endurance, providing opportunity for further triumph. Focused on achievement, he's extremely productive, accomplishing things in a big way!
Randy Wolf (8/22/76) - Canoga Park, CA
Born on the Leo/Virgo cusp, Randy has several planets in scrupulous Virgo. Drawing upon an analytical mind, with an aptitude for detailed work, his mastery of technical skills is phenomenal. With painstaking efficiency, he aims for pinpoint control of his fastball. Signed through 2006, Wolf's emerged as one of the game's best left-handers, posting double-digit wins for the Phillies in three consecutive seasons. Finishing 8th in the league in ERA (3.20) last season, he posted a picayune 2.10 after the All-Star break. His status among NL strikeout leaders is blossoming, though it's a mixed bag for this typically dependable starter. Actions can meet with resistance in May, bringing frustration during a tension-filled period. Pacing himself holds the key to success.
